From Closet to Treasure: How to Spot Hidden Gems While Thrifting

Thrifting is honestly like a treasure hunt. You never really know what you’ll find, but with the right mindset (and a few tips), you can score some seriously good stuff. Here’s how I find my favorite pieces while thrifting:

Check the fabric

I always start by feeling the clothes. Natural materials like cotton, linen, or wool usually mean better quality and longer wear. If it feels soft and sturdy, it’s worth a second look.

Look at the tags

I don’t just check the size—I look at the brand. Some good quality or vintage brands are mixed in with everything else, and finding one is the best feeling. If the tag looks older or unique, I always give it a try.

Inspect everything

Before I get too excited, I check for stains, rips, or missing buttons. A little fix is fine, but I try to be realistic about what I’ll actually take the time to fix.

Explore every section

I never stick to just one area. I’ve found the best oversized jackets in the men’s section and super cute basics in the kids’ racks. It pays to look around.

Go at the right time

Weekdays or early mornings are usually the best times to go. Less crowds and more fresh racks.

The coolest thing about thrifting is finding something totally unique, while also being sustainable. Every piece has a story—and now, it gets to be part of yours. Happy hunting!
